What is Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® and what does it mean?

The Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® is a global independent testing and certification system for raw, semi-finished and finished textile products at all stages of production. The certification proves that the finished textile product is free from harmful substances. The certification system was introduced in 1992 and the main reason is to develop test criteria, limit values and test methods on a scientific basis.

Examples on articles that can be certified: raw and dyed/finished yarns, woven and knitted fabrics, and accessories such as rubber bands, buttons, zippers, sewing thread and labels. You can also certify finished textile products of various types, like household textiles, bed linen and terry products.

Product certification is an optimal tool for companies in the textile industry to secure quality of their textile products and show that the fabric does not contain any harmful substances. ImseVimse certifies their products as far as possible according to Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® Class I for babies 0-3 years, where Class I is the product class that has the strictest criteria. Our certified products are marked with the Oeko-Tex label on the package and ImseVimse’s certification number: SE 12-208.

What criteria are considered?

  • Important legal regulations, such as banned Azo colorants, formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol, cadmium, nickel, etc.
  • Numerous harmful chemicals, even if they aren’t yet legally regulated.
  • Requirements of Annexes XVII and XIV of the European Chemicals Regulation REACh (Reach stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) as well of the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency), SVHC Candidate List (Substances of Very High Concern Identification) insofar as they are assessed by expert groups of the OEKO-TEX® Association to be relevant for fabrics, textiles, garments or accessories. Discussions and developments that are considered to be relevant are taken into account as quickly and effectively as possible trough updates to the Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX® requirements.
  • Requirements from the US CPSIA (Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act).
  • Numerous also environmentally relevant substances classes.

The OEKO-TEX makes tests that includes banned substances and have product classes which monitors harmful substances based on textile materials and the respective purpose of use. The human-ecological requirements are even stricter depending on the level of contact one has with a product and how sensitive your skin is. As mentioned before, ImseVimse has the strictest product class (Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class I). We certify our products in the strictest product class because our products are close to the skin of babies and children up to 3 years.

OEKO-TEX® has four product classes:

  • Product class I:
Articles for babies and toddlers up to 3 years of age (underwear, rompers, clothing, bed linen, terry products etc.)
  • Product class II:
Articles that are worn close to the skin (underwear, bed linen, t-shirts, socks etc.)
  • Product class III:
Articles used away from the skin (jackets, coats etc.)
  • Product class IV:
Decoration/Furnishing materials (curtains, tablecloths, upholstery covers etc.)

The certificate is valid for one year (12 months) for a specified date. ImseVimse reports all ingredients and accompanying certificates and suppliers before any extension of the certificate. Sample and new controls of the material are made continuously because new emission limits are updated annually by the OEKO-TEX.
